BALGOWAN GOLD GELBVIEH STUD ESTABLISHED 1990

Our first Gelbvieh calves were born by using embryo transfers in November 1990.Embryos were flushed from imported full blood donors off farm, which were implanted into our pure-bred Simmental recipient cows. The result was 6 heifers and 1 bull!

After such an encouraging start Shirley has continued to manage our breeding program for the next 33 years. Stud principal Ted Hazlett Joined the Australian Gelbvieh Association and was elected as a councilor. He is a life member. In those early years he particularly enjoyed working with and assisting Mr William Hughes to amend the Australian Gelbvieh regulations. William was an outstanding General Manager who did so much to establish the Gelbvieh breed in Australia.

We chose Gelbvieh as a second breed to our Simmentals after reading the results from the Meat Animal Research center (MARC) at Clay Centre in Nebraska. Gelbvieh had the desired milk, docility, longevity, maternal characteristics, fertility, calving ease and carcass quality. This placed Gelbvieh ahead of all European breeds.

The Full blood foundation females were Circle T Wilma 32W (ImpCan) and Bells Hill Wanda

Bulls used initially were  Taurus (Imp Can) and  Triangle T Topper and later LTC Prince Albert, Bear Tooth Bonanza, Bear Tooth Zest, Hyek Polled Master Mind ,KCF Bennett Horizon, PHG Prairie Lobo, Norolle Absolute Power, Leachman New Day, Top Brass, JRI Cartwright and some of our home bred polled bulls, and recently, polled genetics from Weetalabah

The stud has always been a closed herd with no live cattle purchases.

Our 1994 showing at Royal Sydney show ( Gelbvieh entries 69 head) was a highlight with Balgowan Gold Magnolia winning Grand Champion  Gelbvieh Female at 15 months to defeat the Senior Champion cow on the day. At the Royal Adelaide Show in 1995 Balgowan Gold Magnolia was judged the Supreme Gelbvieh Exhibit

At the Canberra Royal Show in 1997 Balgowan Gold Mata with B.G. Miss Sydney at foot won the Supreme Gelbvieh exhibit and was placed second in the interbreed female out of 22 entries.

We have exhibited at Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney Royal shows and local agricultural shows with much success.

Now we are in semi-retirement with only a small number of stud cattle.

We warmly welcome Ruth and Andrew Burford “Lara Park” and also Jenny and Michael Schulz “Schevan Gully” to our Gelbvieh family. Photographs and stories of shared enthusiasm for Gelbvieh gives us much pleasure.
